VOLUNTEERS
Volunteers
Welcome to the South Bay Union Elementary School District Volunteer Program. Volunteers are essential partners in creating a thriving school environment. Your contributions directly support our vision: fostering positive connections with students to encourage learning, independence, and success.
As outlined in our Strategic Plan (2023–2028) and Community Schools model, we aim to:
- Provide equitable access to high-quality learning
- Create supportive environments with integrated services
- Engage families as authentic partners
- Foster collaboration across our district and community
We are grateful you are joining us in this work.
Your Role in Our Community School Model
As a district-wide Community School, SBUSD embraces a whole-child approach. Volunteers contribute to:
- Enriched learning through tutoring, mentoring, and enrichment support
- Social-emotional development through relationship-building and supervision
- Family engagement by co-leading events and support programs
- Community collaboration by connecting school and outside services
Volunteer Core Values and Ethics
All SBUSD volunteers are expected to uphold our Core Values:
- Teamwork: Collaborate with staff, families, and fellow volunteers
- Kindness: Model empathy and respect in all interactions
- Accountability: Be reliable, communicate absences, and maintain confidentiality
- Support: Assist in building a positive and inclusive school climate
- Competence: Learn and grow alongside students and staff
Volunteers support—not replace—staff. Your role is to extend the reach of our educators and support systems.
Background Checks and Orientation
1. Fingerprinting and Background Check:
- All regularly occuring volunteers must pass fingerprint clearance through the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
- Volunteers will receive instructions and paperwork from the school office to complete this process.
- Fingerprint clearance must be received before participating in any volunteer activities on campus or during school events.
2. Tuberculosis (TB) Clearance:
- All volunteer instructional aides must submit documentation verifying they are free from active tuberculosis.
- A TB test must be administered by a licensed healthcare provider and updated at least once every four years.
- Proof of clearance must be submitted to the school office prior to volunteering in any capacity involving student interaction.
These requirements are in place to protect the health and safety of all students, staff, and community members. Thank you for your cooperation and commitment to a safe school environment.
Volunteer Voice: Your Feedback Matters
Your feedback is important. Volunteers will be invited annually to share experiences through surveys or listening sessions to improve the program and align with our goals around continuous improvement and shared power.
